Materials Needed

Different craft materials included egg carton, paints, and hot glue gun.

For this craft you’ll need the following materials:

  • 1 dozen egg carton
  • Thin cardboard boxes (think cereal, cracker, or granola bar boxes)
  • Scissors
  • Paint (I used 3 different colors for the background and frames, 2 different browns for the faces, and white)
  • Acrylic markers
  • Hot glue gun
  • Embellishments, optional

Instructions

You can watch a video of the entire process here.

Shapes cut from cardboard on white table.

1. Start by cutting out the background pieces and “frames” from the cardboard boxes. They don’t have to be exact, but my frames were between 5.5 and 7.5 inches and the backgrounds slightly smaller. Use different shapes like ovals, squares, rectangles, and wavy lines to create visual interest.

2. Paint the backgrounds and frame. You can use soft, pastel colors like I did, or use bright, vibrant spring colors depending on your preference.

3. While you’re waiting for the frames and backgrounds to dry, cut 5 bunny heads from the egg cartons. You’ll be cutting the middle part that sticks up in the carton NOT the round part that cradles the eggs.

4. Once you have the bunny heads cut, trim around the bottom so that they stand up as straight as possible.

5. Make 4 small cuts around the top of the bunny heads. Gently press the flaps you’ve just created over each other and secure them down with a dot of hot glue.

6. Cut out 10 bunny ears using the top of the egg carton.

7. Paint the bunny faces and ears using the brown and white paints.

8. Use the fine tip black acrylic marker to add the eyes, nose and mouth on each bunny.

9. Glue each bunny face and ears to the backgrounds. You can also add fabric flowers to the backgrounds at this point.

10. Use the acrylic markers to give each bunny an outfit and decorate their photo backdrop.

11. Glue the backdrops to the frames and add any additional embellishments like bows or beads.

Tips and Tricks

When you’re painting the “frame” portion, you don’t have to paint all of the way to the middle of the cardboard. Just paint around what will show once you attach the background.

You can also use the acrylic markers to add a nice edge to the frame.

You can save the part of the carton that holds the eggs and use it as a paint tray to really recycle as much as possible!

Place the bunny faces and ears on each background before you glue them on so you make sure the placement is good.

This is the perfect craft for littles to help with! Let their imagination and creativity run wild as they decorate their own bunny portrait.

This craft took a few hours to put together. I was filming and photographing every step, so that could have been part of it, but it does take time to cut everything out and wait for the paint to dry. So just keep that in mind before you start!
